A hundred days before, Lincoln had issued a preliminary Proclamation, vowing to free the slaves in all the states still in active rebellion against the federal authority on this very day, January 1. That handwritten document, still lovingly preserved in the New York State Library, essentially gave the South a hundred days' notice to end the rebellion or forfeit their human property. But the rebellion had continued. The order would now be executed.

Essay on Volunteer Work - 511 Words - StudyMode

The Transient Division of FERA was established in July 1933, volunteering to furnish all the necessary funds for a transient program in those states that drew up an approved plan for dealing with transients. "Local antagonism toward transients was so great, however, that despite the fact that no state and local funds were required, only a few states had applied for funds before September 1933." (Williams p. 148) It was not until late in December that 40 states and the District of Columbia were operating transient programs. Most states required a period of residence of one year to qualify for relief in that state, and FERA accepted this. FERA defined as a transient one who had lived less than the twelve preceding months in the state in which he was applying for aid.

Cesar Chavez had great confidence that cooperatives and credit unions could serve as a means to empower people. He and Helen, his wife, had worked for the Community Service Organization (CSO) in the fifties and early sixties. The CSO helped bring improvements by tackling problems in Hispanic communities. Cesar experienced first-hand what it meant to organize others to work cooperatively to bring improvements to their lives and to their communities. It is my understanding that during this time he promoted the idea of credit unions. It is no surprise then that Cesar would desire to carry the idea of coops and a credit union to the poorest most neglected population when he began his work organizing farm workers into a union—united in their efforts to take control of their own lives—fighting for decent wages, improved working conditions and essential benefits sorely lacking to them. Cesar’s idea, too, of a credit union of their own would enable farm workers to finally be in a position to help each other financially.

Not surprising, Cesar Chavez wanted the Farm Worker Coop gas station to be the first building built on the new Forty Acres, and it was to be built with adobe bricks with a California mission tile roof – cool in the summer, warm in the winter, he maintained. Richard Chavez, master craftsman and brother to Cesar, shaped up a volunteer crew and the building was completed by the end of 1967. In typical movement fashion, the first use of the coop building was not as a gas station but as the site of the first Cesar Chavez twenty-five day public Fast for Nonviolence – February/March 1968.
