Graduates are prepared to work in multiple work environments. Schools, special districts, and clinical/healthcare settings employ health promoters to coordinate health programs. Companies need health risk appraisals and health screenings. Community and government agencies need policy, outreach, and mass media health campaign evaluators. Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) credentials are also available from the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NHCEC).
“I wholeheartedly believe that UGA has given me the opportunities I needed to grow, explore and build a strong sense of community. When I started at UGA in the fall of 2012, I wanted to double major in psychology and anthropology with a minor in Spanish. However, after learning about the College of Public Health and realizing that I wanted to place a greater emphasis on learning a language, I quickly switched to double major in health promotion and behavior and Spanish instead. In May this year, I graduated with honors with a B.A. in Spanish and symbolically walked with my health promotion cohort at our Commencement ceremony. Currently, I am spending my last semester as a UGA undergrad off campus completing the last degree requirement for health promotion, a 300-hour practical internship. The multiple experiences I’ve had over the years inside and outside the classroom have taught me the importance of academia, research, practice and collaboration.”
“Before returning to academia, I was at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C., where I was the acting chief economist involved in policy decisions related to securities regulation. Since coming to UGA in 1987, I have taught a broad spectrum of students at UGA, and at every level, it is enjoyable to get to know my students and to hear about their backgrounds and their hopes for the future. It is difficult to pick a favorite course of all time, but probably my current favorite is my class in which students manage an actual investment portfolio. The students analyze the market, make stock purchase and sale decisions, and report on their performance to a supervisory board of alumni and to the UGA Foundation. I also enjoy teaching Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) seminars, introducing students to the research process and encouraging them in their own independently designed projects. And, of course, I loved teaching in the UGA at Oxford program last summer.”

''UGA has afforded me the opportunity to travel extensively during my undergraduate career. I spent a summer learning about international conflict at Oxford University in England and working with the World Health Organization’s Hospital and Research Center for Diabetes in India. In small community health clinics on the mountainside of Lima, Peru, and in the coffee farms of Managua, Nicaragua, I learned about the art of diagnosis and felt deeply the degree to which poverty inscribes itself in an individual’s health. This past summer, through the Honors in New York program, I worked with the Greater New York Hospital Association under Susan Waltman. I do not think I will ever have a boss who was (and still is) as invested in my personal and academic development as she was.''

Stretch'd and still lies the midnight,
Two great hulls motionless on the breast of the darkness,
Our vessel riddled and slowly sinking, preparations to pass to the
one we have conquer'd,
The captain on the quarter-deck coldly giving his orders through a
countenance white as a sheet,
Near by the corpse of the child that serv'd in the cabin,
The dead face of an old salt with long white hair and carefully
The flames spite of all that can be done flickering aloft and below,
The husky voices of the two or three officers yet fit for duty,
Formless stacks of bodies and bodies by themselves, dabs of flesh
upon the masts and spars,
Cut of cordage, dangle of rigging, slight shock of the soothe of waves,
Black and impassive guns, litter of powder-parcels, strong scent,
A few large stars overhead, silent and mournful shining,
Delicate sniffs of sea-breeze, smells of sedgy grass and fields by
the shore, death-messages given in charge to survivors,
The hiss of the surgeon's knife, the gnawing teeth of his saw,
Wheeze, cluck, swash of falling blood, short wild scream, and long,
dull, tapering groan,
These so, these irretrievable.
